It is better to go for something easier to skill and gain some additional skills in those professions for free before you move to them. You can start with crafting or beauty or mindforce, but it is harder to skill there. Do what is most fun for you, but there are paths that will unlock the skills cheaper than others.
If you like mindforce chips you will start unlocks with Power Catalyst, if you start with mining your first unlock will be Ground Assessment or Extraction. In Loot 1.0 you didn't need a 30k+ ped weapon to break even, just needed to be smart.You can unlock hidden skill in different ways. But realistically it's the only remaining way to get anywhere. Just investing in a great gun is not enough. It's possible to make it work, but most people don't realize what it takes. They get devalued all the time as new and better guns get released, so if you pay some ungodly amount for 70-80%+ efficiency UL weapon, ask yourself, do you cycle enough to earn your money back faster than your gun loses its market value.

With (L) guns absolutely not because the markup takes away much more than the better efficiency brings in, LR-10 vs LLC-10 is a perfect example of that, armatrix series is a venomous snake in a pretty box. You can't cover 5% with markup, not constantly, not long-term, you badly need 2-3% more and higher efficiency can provide it. Even if you steadily reach the sacred 95%, it's not good enough. But globals now are just a part of your expected statistical 95%-ish return, and even that is only if you cycle enough to be "statistically average".īut let's say you play smart and at your level or even below it, and completely avoided all inefficiencies and maximized your loot composition and potential markup in loot. Hell, people nowadays go as far as using the worst DPP guns and intentionally overamping them to hit globals left and right. Thus no chances to cover your unavoidable TT deficit. Now all those costs are returned in loot, but higher defense costs mean more total cost without more damage output, thus lower DPP, thus less potential markup in loot.
Before, all the defense costs and inefficiencies like overamping and overkilling were lost, so hunting too high was eating into your returns even if otherwise you could break even or profit. The golden rule always was to not hunt stuff you struggle with, but the reason why you shouldn't do it has changed. ( even though I somehow got an 83PED global on a puny berry! ). But I do see that there seems to be much less variance in the loot payouts. It is still matching your gear and skills to make efficient kills that is the most important factor. But the efficiency difference won't amount to a huge difference in the loot. So comparing Isis LLC-10 and ArMatrix LR-10, the LR-10 has a higher efficiency, and you'd therefore expect better loot so long as you are hunting an appropriate mob for its dps output. The Efficiency parameter is a relatively small component in loot calculations (no more than 7% of total loot value). I see in the first one, it says: For optimal loot, it will be important to avoid inefficiencies such as low damage output compared to creature health, excessive time and cost to kill, overkill damage, unmaxed weapons and other factors.
